Britain By Car - A Motoring History

Avon

A relatively short-lived county that came into being in 1974, but by 1996 had been abolished.  It sits astride the River Avon and was created from the City of Bristol (once a county in its own right) and small parts of Gloucestershire and Somerset.

Although the name has formally fallen into disuse, it is still retained in the names of many organisations and services.
