Located in the Dearne Valley, the economy of Mexborough was, for almost two hundred years, built around coal mining, quarrying and brickmaking

Since the many pit closures in the 1980s and early 90s, Mexborough has become a dormitory town, serving nearby Doncaster, Rotherham and Barnsley.
