A village lying on the River Leven, situated in the south of the county, about five miles north east of Ulverston.
 
Backbarrow is the site of one of the first iron furnaces in northern England, built during the early 18th century.  It is also closely connected with the manufacture and packaging of the pigment ultramarine, used in the manufacture of paints, inks, printing, paper and laundry products.
