Britain By Car - A Motoring History

Tyne & Wear

The metropolitan county of Tyne & Wear came into being in 1974.  It is made up of the boroughs of North and South Tyneside, Gateshead, and the cities of Newcastle and Sunderland. Tyne & Wear has a long industrial tradition of coal mining, iron and steel production, and shipbuilding.  Today these industries have been largely replaced by higher-end technology, tourism and the arts.
