Britain By Car - A Motoring History

Southampton

Standing at the head of Southampton Water, Southampton is one of Britain leading seaports, with an extensive maritime tradition.  It was the port where the Pilgrim Fathers embarked for America in 1620, and from where the Titanic departed on its ill-fated maiden voyage.

Extensively bombed during the Second World War, much of the city has been redeveloped, although parts of the medieval walls and a small number of its oldest buildings are still standing.
